Navigating Perimenopause at Work Issue #5
This week’s conversation is about how we build a more open and supportive workplace for anyone going through perimenopause.
Whether you are experiencing perimenopause yourself or want to be a better ally to your colleagues, understanding this transition is the first step toward creating a truly inclusive environment.
Understanding the Symptoms That Can Impact Your Day
Perimenopause is the period leading up to menopause, which can last for several years. It's marked by fluctuating hormones, primarily estrogen, which can lead to a range of symptoms. While many of these are manageable, some can directly affect your daily life and productivity at work.
Cas discussed in previous issues, common symptoms include:
Hot Flashes & Night Sweats: Sudden feelings of intense heat that can disrupt concentration and lead to sleep loss.
Brain Fog: Difficulty concentrating, memory lapses, and a general feeling of mental fogginess.
Fatigue: Exhaustion that isn't relieved by sleep, often a result of hormonal changes and disturbed rest.
Mood Swings: Increased irritability, anxiety, or feelings of sadness.
It’s important to remember that these are not weaknesses but natural physiological changes. The goal is to find strategies that help you manage them and thrive at work.
Practical Tips for Managing Symptoms at Your Desk
Making small, mindful adjustments to your routine can have a big impact.
For Hot Flashes: Dress in layers so you can easily adjust to temperature changes. Consider keeping a small, portable fan at your desk and a cold glass of water nearby to help you cool down quickly.
For Brain Fog: To stay organized and on track, break down large tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. Don't be afraid to rely on lists, calendars, and reminders to help you remember key details and deadlines.
For Fatigue: Take short, regular breaks to stand up and stretch or walk around. Be mindful of caffeine and sugar intake, as they can lead to energy crashes later in the day.
Creating a Supportive Culture
Perimenopause is a shared experience that can affect a large part of our workforce. We all have a role to play in building a supportive environment.
For Managers: Be open and empathetic. Create a safe space for dialogue and discuss potential accommodations, such as flexible work hours, if needed. Remember that productivity might fluctuate, and a focus on outcomes over hours can be key.
For Colleagues: Practice kindness and understanding. Avoid making assumptions and respect privacy. A simple "How are you doing?" can go a long way.
